How to fill in the EX-10 form (arraigo social residence, Spain)
The EX-10 is the Spanish form for residence by exceptional circumstances. This guide covers only one use of it, arraigo social (social roots): residence for people who have lived in Spain for at least two years. It explains the current form box by box.

What the form is for
Arraigo social is a temporary residence authorisation for exceptional circumstances for foreigners who have been in Spain for at least two years and who have family ties in Spain or a social integration report. The authorisation includes permission to work, as an employee or self-employed, anywhere in Spain.
You submit the application yourself (or your legal representative, if you are a minor or cannot act for yourself), in person at the Oficina de Extranjería of the province where you live, or online through the online office of the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory (Mercurio). You hand in the EX-10 with your documents and pay the fee with modelo 790 código 052, epígrafe 2.3.1. The fee is due when you submit and must be paid within ten working days.
This guide covers only arraigo social. The same EX-10 form is also used for other types (sociolaboral, socioformativo, familiar, humanitarian reasons and more) that have their own rules; they are not covered here. The ministry says its information sheets are only a guide: the rules in force on the day you submit apply.
Who needs it
The ministry's information sheet no. 28 (Hoja 28, arraigo social, last updated April 2026) lists these conditions. Check the sheet itself before you apply:
- You must have stayed in Spain continuously for at least the two years before you apply. Absences from Spain in that period may not exceed 90 days.
- You must not hold a stay or residence permit, nor have a procedure open to grant, extend, renew or change one.
- You must not be an international protection applicant when you apply or while the application is processed. Time as an applicant until the final decision does not count towards the two years.
- Either you have family ties in Spain with a foreigner who holds a residence permit (spouse, registered partner, or a first-degree relative in the direct line) and means of 200 % of the IPREM in total (100 % for the family member and 100 % for you), available in Spain and coming from those family members. IPREM (Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples) is the public reference income that Spain sets each year.
- Or, without those family ties, a favourable social integration report from the Comunidad Autónoma (or the Ayuntamiento where the region has set it up that way). It must be issued within one month of your request; if it is not and you can prove that, you may show the requirement by any other means.
- You must have no criminal record in Spain or in the countries where you lived in the last five years.
- You must not be a citizen of an EU/EEA state or Switzerland, or a family member covered by the EU-citizen rules.
- You must not be listed as inadmissible in countries with which Spain has an agreement, be within a no-return commitment from a voluntary return, or be a threat to public order, security or health.
- The decision comes within three months from the day after your application is registered with the competent office. If you get no notification by then, the application is treated as refused (silencio negativo).
- The arraigo social authorisation, and its extensions, are valid for one year. An extension requires that you still meet the requirements and are actively looking for work (registered with the public employment service), unless illness, disability or retirement age prevents you.
- Within one month of being notified of the grant, you must apply in person for the foreigner identity card (TIE) at the police office of the place where you live.
Before you start
- The EX-10, original and copy, filled in and signed by you. For the other documents, hand in copies and show the originals.
- A full copy of your valid passport, registration certificate (cédula de inscripción) or travel document.
- Proof of at least two years of continuous stay, with your identification, preferably issued or registered by a Spanish public administration (for example empadronamiento, a hospital stay, a public health consultation or any municipal, regional or state document).
- Criminal record certificate from the country or countries where you lived in the five years before you entered Spain.
- Proof of your family ties (updated marriage or partnership register certificate, birth certificate and similar) or the social integration report.
- If you rely on family ties: proof of the means (200 % of the IPREM in total). If the means come from self-employment, the documents required for that are listed in the sheet.
- Documents from other countries need a sworn translation and legalisation or apostille, unless exempt.
Section by section
Here is what each part asks, in plain words, in the order it appears.
Registration stamp area
The box at the top right is for the office's registration stamps. Leave it empty.
1) Data of the foreigner: passport, N.I.E., names
The form asks to be filled in block capitals with a black pen ("RELLENAR EN MAYÚSCULAS CON BOLÍGRAFO NEGRO"). Passport number (PASAPORTE). Fill in the N.I.E. boxes only if you already have one. Then 1er Apellido (first surname), 2º Apellido (second surname) and Nombre (first name).
Sexo (1)
Tick one: H (hombre, man), M (mujer, woman) or X (undefined). The form says X is only for people whose country of origin recognises it.
Fecha de nacimiento (2), Lugar, País, Nacionalidad
Date of birth as dd/mm/aaaa: 2 digits for the day, 2 for the month, 4 for the year. Then place and country of birth, and your nationality.
Estado civil (3)
S = soltero/a (single), C = casado/a (married), V = viudo/a (widowed), D = divorciado/a (divorced), Sp = separado/a (separated). Tick one.
Nombre del padre, Nombre de la madre
Your father's and your mother's names.
Domicilio en España, Localidad, C.P., Provincia, Teléfono móvil, E-mail
Your address in Spain: street, number (Nº), floor (Piso), town, postcode, province. Give a mobile number and an e-mail: the form says they are used to send an informational notice when a notification is waiting for you.
Representante legal, en su caso (4)
Only if you have a legal representative: name, DNI/NIE/passport and the title of the representation, for example "Padre/Madre del menor". Otherwise leave it empty.
2) Data of the EU/EEA/Swiss family member (only for arraigo familiar)
This section is only for arraigo familiar. For arraigo social leave it empty.
3) Data of the representative submitting the application (5)
Only if someone other than you submits the application (for example an adviser). Otherwise leave the whole section empty.
4) Address for notifications, and Dehú
Name, document and address of the person who should receive notifications. If empty, they go to you. The "CONSIENTO…" box agrees to receive notifications electronically through Dehú (Dirección electrónica habilitada Única); you then need a valid electronic certificate or Cl@ve to read them.
5) Employer and 6) Training centre
Section 5 is only for arraigo sociolaboral and section 6 only for arraigo socioformativo. For arraigo social leave both empty.
7) Type of authorisation requested (12)
Under TIPO DE SOLICITUD tick Residencia inicial (first application). Leave Prórroga (extension) and Provisional alone. Under TIPO DE AUTORIZACIÓN tick Arraigo social (art. 127.c) and nothing else.
Place, date, signature, Dirigida a
Town and date, then your signature (or your legal representative's). "DIRIGIDA A", "Código DIR3" and "PROVINCIA" name the office the application is addressed to; if you do not know the DIR3 code, ask that office.
Common mistakes
Ticking the wrong type of arraigo
Arraigo social (art. 127.c) is not the same as sociolaboral, socioformativo or familiar. Tick only the one that matches your case.
Filling in sections 2, 5 or 6
These are for other types of arraigo (familiar, sociolaboral, socioformativo). Leave them empty for arraigo social.
Applying before you meet the two years
You need two years of continuous stay before applying, and absences may not exceed 90 days. Check your proof of stay first.
Ticking the Dehú box without an electronic certificate
Electronic notifications are read with a valid electronic certificate or Cl@ve. Without one you can miss the answer.
Foreign documents without translation or legalisation
Documents from other countries need a sworn translation and legalisation or apostille, unless exempt. Prepare them before you go.
Bringing a single copy
The form says an original and a copy are submitted. Print it twice.
